Advancements in speech-recognition technologies are creating new marketing opportunities especially in high-tech applications. Speech-to-text systems are being used by physicians to vocally input diagnoses, examinations and recommended medical procedures. Reed Elsevier Inc.'s Lexis and West Publishing Co.'s WestLaw online legal database allows online research using instructions spoken into a microphone linked to a computer. Novell Inc. has launched packaged software bundled with speech recognition software. Efforts are underway to develop a programming interface to standardize speech-recognition software.
