Television's hidden resource
Article Abstract:
Businesses accessing information from a variety of sources should take advantage of the cost-free television information service known as teletext. As a 'piggy-back' service offered by television stations while programs are simultaneously transmitted, teletext is accessible to British televiewers with nine-m sets through either ITV4 or C4's Oracle, or through BBC1 and BBC2's Ceefax. Televiewers can avail of teletext by pressing the TEXT button on their remote controls. Accessibility of the different pages is made possible by entering a specific three-digit number. The service is markedly slower than computer-based information services. When compared to information retrieval from newspapers through an outside information service, teletext is indeed faster and more cost-effective. It would be helpful for teletext users to remember that the system does not have a built-in index, nor is a printed one available.
