Somerfield: gateway to success
Article Abstract:
Somerfield plans to raise some 500 million pounds sterling in a flotation on the stock market in Jul 1996 and will repay debts accrued by its parent, Isosceles, using this debt. The company ranks fifth among UK food retailers. Somerfield has invested 150 million pounds sterling in changing Gateway stores to the Somerfield logo. Sales and profits have risen and profits are likely to be boosted further by investments in outlets. Conditions in the market for UK food retailers are difficult but the company tends to operate stores in urban areas where competition is less intense.

Tesco
Article Abstract:
Tesco is performing well, despite a review by the regulator into food retail prices in the United Kingdom. The company holds 16% of the UK market and is the leading retailer. The UK market is mature and growth is slow, while Wal-Mart's entry into the market will increase competition. Tesco should benefit from the development of non-food sales, and the company is also investing in a number of markets abroad, such as Poland, Thailand and Ireland.
