The Footsie's false friend comes back
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom pension fund managers have large cash holdings and more government securities are likely to be bought than issued, so some of this cash may be invested in stocks. High liquidity does not always prevent drops in stock prices, however, and levels of liquidity may be high due to pessimism about the stock market. Sentiment tends to be more important for the market than money. The market may already have built liquidity into its calculations. Some liquidity could also seep out of the financial system and lead to retail price inflation, which tends to shore up interest rates.

Aran Energy is among the companies which has performed well, as have Farnell Electronics and South Wales Electricity. Vega has also performed well in terms of results and share price. Aran and South Wales Electricity have both been the subject of bids. Sheriff has performed less well and has been affected by problems in the UK construction industry since it is involved in plant hire.

High income from recovery stocks
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Jul 1997 Budget has been followed by a rise in stock prices measured by the FTSE 100 index. Convertible stocks have generally performed well though some have underperformed. Convertibles can offer access to recovery stocks among the underperformers. Interest rates are set to rise and this will increase the risk of investing in convertibles, but initally convertibles can offer good opportunities for investors who are selective.
