The Footsie's profits puzzle
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom corporate earnings could grow more strongly, some analysts argue, though government statistics indicate a drop in gross operating surpluses for 1998-1999. Official statistics may underestimate profits and ignore the contribution from overseas earnings. Earnings could also rise as a result of a drop in the value of pound sterling, though this is not certain, and the pound could rise. Investors appear less optimistic than analysts, judging by some parts of the stock market.

The puzzle over Footsie's volatility
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock prices have been volatile as measured by the FTSE 100 index, and this volatility has increased since May 1997, while it has decreased for Wall Street. Volatility may increase when trading is thin as happens in the month of August, but this is not always the case. Volatility could reflect the end of a bull market, but there is no certainty that this is the case. Longer term volatility has been low and investors may not thus be concerned about volatility.
