The MBA: managers only please
Article Abstract:
One of the many changes that the MBA has undergone since its introduction at Harvard University in the early 1900s is the recent requirement for those who enter the program to have prior management experience. Some business schools continue to admit new graduates, but majority are requiring at least two years of managerial experience due to the common belief that an MBA degree can sometimes weaken a graduate's ability to master experience. Many of the early MBAs have been described as 'either congenitally naive or victims of their business training.' The challenge for business students now is how to earn an MBA degree while holding down a job. A number of schools have responded by offering part-time MBA programs. This works well for many managers because they get the opportunity to study and work at the same time, and they are getting financial support from employers who have not been willing to sponsor full-time MBA students.

An asset in any field
Article Abstract:
Newly qualified accountants should consider obtaining a master of business administration (MBA) degree as their next career action. An MBA degree is highly desirable, regardless of whether professionals choose to stay in practice, enter into consultancy or move into industry, commerce, public service or volunteer sector. Accountants may choose from the myriad of MBA programs available to them, depending on their career plans and situation. Some courses accept newly qualified graduates while others are only post-experience or post-graduate programs that require management experience. Some courses can be taken full-time while others can be completed on a staggered basis. Distance learning is also available to those whose choice of school is too distant. To evaluate the reputation of schools, students may consult with the books 'The Association of MBAs Guide to Business Schools' and 'Which MBA?'
