The Macintosh: still fighting IBM
Article Abstract:
The early success of Apple Computer Inc's Macintosh computer in winning a substantial slice of the business computer market was largely attributable to the ease by which businesspeople took to using its graphics-based functions. However, this early advantage has been offset by the introduction of Windows software for IBM-compatible computers. As a result, the long-running battle between IBM-compatibles and the Apple MacIntosh has shifted in favor of the IBM-compatibles. This trend has become increasingly evident in the accounting software market where IBM-compatible software have taken a dominant share of the market. An increasing number of accounting software packages based on the Apple MacIntosh have been developed but most have yet to make a dent on the market dominance held by IBM-compatible software packages.

Smaller solutions for the big problems
Article Abstract:
Mainframes are not expected to be in wide use in the business arena by the start of the next century, and downsizing towards smaller mini and personal computer (PC)-based systems is a growing trend among many companies. MSDOS is expected to be the main operating system for PCs, while UNIX is emerging as the standard operating system for minicomputers. There is a clear trend towards open systems and this is expected to cause a shake-up among hardware manufacturers. Case studies of downsizing of systems at three British organizations are presented to illustrate its advantages.

The mainframe's foreseeable future
Article Abstract:
The commercial market for mainframe computers may be shrinking, but few experts expect these powerful machines to disappear overnight. One reason is the intention of many leading manufacturers to keep the mainframe market alive because of the healthy profits that can be made on their proprietary operating systems and software. ICL PLC, IBM Europe SA and Digital Equipment Corp are all actively competing for the European market.
