The Pep family
Article Abstract:
There are different types of personal equity plan (Pep) available in the UK. General Peps offer tax advantages up to 6,000 pounds sterling invested, while an additional 3,000 pounds can be invested in a Single Company Pep. Only one manager can be used for each General Pep every year, though a different manager can be chosen for a Single Pep. Peps can be used for investing in unit trusts, and managed Peps are also available, investing directly in securities. Corporate Bond Peps were launched in 1995. There are also self-select Peps allowing investors to select shares themselves.

A safe pair of hands
Article Abstract:
There are some 320 investment trusts on offer for UK investors, compared with more than 1,600 unit trusts. Investment trusts still offer a wide range of opportunities and there are 20 categories to choose from. Investors can assess past performance and should not be excessively worried about charges since performance is more important. Net asset value is one measure of performance. International trusts have not performed well, but may be useful in 1997 since an election is to be held this year. They can also protect value against a fall in pound sterling.
