The United States of South America?
Article Abstract:
The proposals to establish a political and economic union "United States of South America," as envisioned by the Latin Americans, from the plans of Southern Cone Common Market (Mercosur) in order to rival the Economic Union (EU) is examined. Argentina and Venezuela have taken initial steps when they signed a letter of intent in creating Petrosur as an energy company that will bring together all Latin American state-run oil companies. The feasibility of the proposed bloc that it may be more beneficial to the US-sponsored Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is discussed.
