The expert in your tool-kit
Article Abstract:
Expert systems are computer programs that store the knowledge of experts in certain areas for use of non-experts. These systemscan be used to identify problems, generate solutions to these problems, draw inferences and offer advice based on data they are given, and even provide explanations for its line of reasoning. The growth in the use of expert systemsin practically all sectors of business has been spurred by the proliferation ofless expensive but more effective tools for developing such systems, the financial support given by the government for the development of the systems, and the favorable experiences of users regarding the systems. In the British accountancy profession, expert systems are employed more often in analyzing andreprocessing data that have gone through conventional systems. Small businessesstand to benefit considerably from the use of expert systems.

EC law's impact on UK business
Article Abstract:
The UK has not benefited substantially from membership in the European Community (EC). Per capita GDP has declined in relation to other major industrialized EC countries, and the UK has run a trade deficit with the EC since 1972. This situation may be the result of the increased food prices caused by the EC-wide subsidization of agriculture and the elimination of cheaper food suppliers from the Commonwealth. Conversely, the EC does not provide ready markets for UK industrial exports. While the industrial sector has not been successful in exporting to other EC countries, the service industries have been successful. The accounting and legal professions have benefited from EC law and are in a good position in relation to their continental competitors to benefit from the single European market of 1992.
