The ghost of Fawlty Towers
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom hotel industry performed well in 1997, though investors are concerned that the business cycle has peaked. This means that the industry could be affected by the strength of pound sterling and lower economic growth. There is a difference between the market in London, England, which is more dependent on overseas trade, and the market elsewhere. This market has not been hit by the high value of pound sterling since London is attractive to tourists. The industry is fragmented which means that long-term consolidation is likely.

Service with a smile (and with a certificate)
Article Abstract:
Successful hotels focus on their customers' needs, and training for hotel staff helps hotels to be successful. Hotels depend a great deal on the quality of their staff and the full potential of the industry can be realised only if attention is paid to training staff. The Hotel and Catering International Management Association (HCIMA) helps maintain standards in the industry. The tasks of the HCIMA include accreditation of training courses for hotel staff.
