The Caspian Sea region is potentially a major petroleum producer, and companies have signed agreements with governments in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. There are problems such as lack of telecommunications infrastructure and transportation of the petroleum. Iran, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia and Russia want pipelines to pass through their territories, and Japan, China and Russia also want to ensure supply. The first barrel from the Azerbaijan International Operating Company's Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field will be produced in Sep 1997.

Dragon Oil: sea of promise

Dragon Oil will have 37.5 million pounds sterling invested by businessmen from Indonesia, and a placing will be carried out for existing shareholders of 12.7 million pounds at 0.0015 pounds sterling per share. The group of Indonesians will hold a stake of between 46% and 54% in the company. Dragon has an interest in a Caspian Sea field called Block 2. The 30% stake was acquired in Oct 1995. There are political risks involved, in addition to possible changes in petroleum prices and possible problems with extracting the petroleum.
