Computers and people - casting the players
Article Abstract:
A study of how individuals adapt to computers in small firms is presented. The same patterns of behavior and the same resulting problems appear across diverse organizations, and people problems in all cases outweigh technical problems. Concepts from open systems theory, expectancy theory, and social information processing theory are used to describe the "types" of workers encountered and to test predictions about outcomes. A limited set of roles or types can be found, all of which can be characterized in terms of individual beliefs and expectations. Identifying these types of individuals and examining both their inter- and intragroup relationships can make the computer adaptation procedure more predictable and manageable.

Ethics: take it from the top
Article Abstract:
A recent Time magazine article reveals that businesses lose $40 billion each year to white collar crime. Experts believe changes in environmental factors, such as reductions in regulatory agencies and increases in outside competition, challenge established corporate cultures, break down internal ethical controls, and result in unethical business practices. Management can encourage ethical behavior throughout their organizations by: serving as role models for other workers; hiring individuals with established integrity; striving for open and honest communication; and establishing firm rules and policies.
