The joys of inflation
Article Abstract:
UK supermarkets benefit from inflation which allows them to offload costs onto customers. Supermarkets have cut costs and there are few cost savings left to make. Supermarkets should start to generate cash with a slowdown in building. There is still oversupply in a static market. Supermarkets are increasing their non-food sales and are likely to have to compete on the range of products and service offered instead of prices. The sector is undergoing a revival in 1995.

Tough times ahead
Article Abstract:
UK food retailers have been affected by intense competition and higher costs. Suppliers have had to absorb cost increases but it may not be possible to continue this strategy. Sales of non-food items with higher margins are helping to offset poor margins from food sales. New sites are more difficult to find and profits will have to come from existing stores. Some companies are diversifying abroad and this underlines the uncertainties facing the industry.

A trip-up in the aisles
Article Abstract:
Carrefour holds a stake of 15% in Office Depot which was to have been acquired by Staples. The acquisition may not be permitted due to opposition from the Federal Trade Commission. The deal might be allowed if some stores were divested, and Carrefour would benefit from windfall profits if it were allowed. Meanwhile, the French Competition Council is to study the acquisition of a 41% stake in Cora by Carrefour, and this could also lead to store disposals.
