The long-term dangers of gray-market sales
Article Abstract:
Unauthorized importation into the US of cut-rate, US brand name goods intended for foreign markets undermines product integrity and reduces product profit margins, while eliminating manufacturer incentives to improve products. The 'gray market' persists, however, stimulated by global advertising, increased licensing opportunities for brand name products, multiple price scheduling, government trade policies, and ineffective legislation. The Coalition to Preserve the Integrity of American Trademarks suggests reducing the potential for deception by removing trademarks from gray market goods. Other options include: one-price strategies, serial number tracing, duty-free airport marketing, tighter licensing policies, manufacturer purchase of excess inventories, increased brand name promotion, and improved manufacturer relationships with domestic retailers.
