The man from the Pru rings in the changes
Article Abstract:
Prudential Corporation Group Finance Dir Michael Lawrence has been named chairman of the 100 Group of finance directors. A key figure in the transformation of Prudential into a widely admired leader in the financial services industry, Lawrence is considered to be one of the most innovative finance directors in the UK. He is best known for his role in the development of Prudential's highly sophisticated financial control system and is also acknowledged to be the driving force behind the proposal that accruals-based accounting be adopted in calculating earnings for life insurance and pensions accounts. As chairman of the 100 Group, which is composed of finance directors from the UK's largest companies, Lawrence is expected to continue the high-profile approach adopted by his predecessor in enunciating the 100 Group's position on financial reporting reform in the UK and in Europe.

Management antics at the zoo
Article Abstract:
The dramatic decrease in the number of visitors has thrown the financially independent London Zoo into a deep financial crisis. The zoo has received substantial monetary assistance from the UK government, which did little to solve its troubles. The self-financing zoo's financial situation has gone so bad that it came under the scrutiny of management consultancy firm KPMG Peat Marwick and the Department of the Environment on separate occasions. With the zoo's financial difficulties, its closure seems imminent.
