The need for standards, not guidelines, in biological data reporting and sharing
Article Abstract:
Standards are proposed to communicate and exchange large genomic, poroteomic and metabolomic data sets and complementary metadata but these standards are developed without full consideration of their impact on the user community. The issues associated with the premature adoption of evolving standards, as well as the requirement of interoperability between disparate data sources from different levels of biological organization are discussed to facilitate the elucidation of comprehensive interaction networks that describe and can be used to predict biological behavior.

Three barriers to innovative diagnostics
Article Abstract:
The translation of new diagnostics into clinically applied assays face significant barriers. Three of such barriers include the difficulty of proving new tests, the problem of obtaining appropriate payment for an innovative diagnostic that is equitable to the investment in research and development, and convincing people that the benefits of diagnostic-driven health are not outweighed by privacy and discrimination fears.

Should we make a fuss? A case for social responsibility in science
Article Abstract:
The scientific community needs to be better educated about the social and ethical implications of its research, if the society is to remain in step with new technology. The research enterprise both reflects and influences social policy and it is more necessary than ever that scientists be part of the public conversation that fosters both an understanding of science and shapes the impact science would have on society.
