The organizational routines factor market paradox

The article critiques the resource-based view of business strategy, which states that successful organizational routines must be tacit to prevent their diffusion throughout a given market. It delineates the conditions sufficient and necessary for the generation of successful organizational routines that are explicit, not tacit, in the case of franchises.

An extension of Chandler's strategy - structure insight into an entirely new theoretical domain and empirical context, is developed. The argument that franchised and company-owned structures differ along the important dimensions of decision rights, operating flexibility, and incentive structure is stated.
