The paradox of strategic controls
Article Abstract:
Literature is reviewed on strategic control systems, which are systems that enable managers to establish whether a business unit is performing well. The review indicates that while there are a number of theories suggesting that strategic control systems are beneficial, few firms actually have functioning systems because they are very complex. Problems associated with establishing systems include difficulty in defining strategic controls that can accommodate flexibility and uncertainty in the implementation of strategy; difficulty in implementing strategy; and difficulty in determining strategic goals that are suitable for motivating managers. A framework is suggested which can help to determine which businesses could benefit most from strategic control systems.

Strategic marketing variables under conditions of competitive bidding
Article Abstract:
A bidding pyramid is presented as a conceptual framework to comprehend the connections between variables which are important during the process of strategic marketing decision-making in firms which are awarded orders through the process of competitive bidding. The framework has been generated from findings of research projects analyzing the construction sector in the UK. The six major variables addressed by the bidding pyramid include estimating capacity, sales management, and pricing. The framework suggests that firm management must adjust variables if firms want to achieve the best performance possible.
