The pause that refreshes
Article Abstract:
European unemployment levels have dropped, but economic growth is showing signs of faltering. German domestic demand may have dropped in 2nd qtr 1998. Inventories have increased, and destocking could create problems if demand is not strong enough. Growth is stronger in the Netherlands and Spain than in Germany. German stocks could be affected, but a slowdown could also stimulate restructuring which would help stock prices over the longer term. The pause in growth may also be temporary, and low interest rates should help European economies.

A year of two halves for Europe
Article Abstract:
The major mainland European stock markets have performed well in 1997, though there are concerns that problems relating to European monetary union could affect the market. Interest rates may also be raised which could hit stock prices. The rise in value of the US dollar has helped corporate earnings to some extent, and this may not continue. Mainland European stocks may perform better than US or UK stocks due to their stage in the business cycle, but they would still be hit by a drop in US stock prices.

How to tap into Europe's most dynamic marketplace
Article Abstract:
Euro.NM is a network of stock markets in Europe, bringing together the smaller exchanges. United Kingdom investors can use a pooled fund to gain access to this market and there are dedicated funds available, though information may only be available through financial advisers. Euro.NM stocks offer opportunities due to high growth rates, but they may also be affected by speculative bubbles. General European funds specialising in small companies are an easy way to gain access to this market.
