Article Abstract:
Connecticut-based 454 Life Sciences announced the commercial launch of the Genome Sequencer 20 (GS20), its innovative and potentially cost-effective sequencing technology in October 2005. The GS20 and a similar technology developed by an academic group led by George Church at Harvard University are at the forefront of a program by the US National Human Genomic Research Institute (NHRGI) that aims to bolster efforts at methods capable of sequencing an entire human genome for US$100,000.

A reprise for collaborative financing in biotech
Article Abstract:
Four biotech companies have raised money by a stratagem known as "Collaborative development financing" which allows the companies to retain the value of their drugs by developing them further without going through early licensing. The pros and cons of such a strategy from the viewpoint of benefits accruing for the companies involved in such collaborations are discussed.
