The seven deadly sins of job-hunting
Article Abstract:
UK recruitment consultants can be useful for job-seekers but they should follow a number of guidelines. The consultants specialise in employees earning high salaries and make their money from fees paid by employers. They are not interested in helping job-seekers develop their careers so should not be expected to give careers advice. Job-seekers should be available when needed and not make demands on the consultants. They should also provide factual career histories and short covering letters, avoiding jargon.

Cherchez l'emploi
Article Abstract:
Employment in the European Union should not be affected by national barriers and European jobs are advertised in the UK. There are, however, some barriers, such as the need for language skills, and mutual recognition of qualifications which may involve an aptitude test. Cultural adaptability is important in the information technology industry. The banking industry is already dominated by London, England, which partly explains why UK professionals from this field tend not to work in Europe.

New opportunities shovelling coal
Article Abstract:
Manpower is the biggest employer in the UK and temporary contracts have become increasingly important, even for senior staff. Companies specialising in supplying senior staff on a temporary basis include Praxis. Demand for such staff is stronger in information technology, finance and human resources. Interim managers may prefer to work on a temporary basis, and those who have niche expertise find employment more easily than do generalists.
