The warrant supply dries up
Article Abstract:
The number of United Kingdom investment trust warrants is beginning to drop and new issues are not replacing warrants reaching their due date. Investment trust discounts have widened and this could offer an investment opportunity. Some trusts have been affected by economic problems in Asia and problems of some Asian countries like Thailand and Indonesia are likely to persist. Other trusts should recover, and this applies especially to those specialising in smaller companies.

Article Abstract:
Stocks tend to benefit from strong bond markets, but this is not always the case, and United Kingdom and US investors have seen stock prices drop at a time when bond prices have risen. Lower yields for government securities and lower yields for convertible stocks tend to go together. Strong stock prices in 1998 have helped to boost convertibles, as have rising government securities. The rating for underlying stocks should be attractive when convertble yields are low.

Warrant buyers: do you feel lucky?
Article Abstract:
The UK stock warrant market has seen patchy gains in 1997. The rise in UK stock prices has been limited to a few sectors like insurance, and not all trusts have performed well. Trusts investing outside the UK have been affected by the high value of pound sterling. The pound will not remain high for ever, especially as UK wages are rapidly rising. Overseas stocks become cheaper when the pound is high, but selecting the right overseas stock is not easy.
