In preparing effective advertising copy, the formula known by every copywriter is AIDA - attention, interest, desire, and action. The carrier envelope, letter, enclosure, reply card, and reply envelope, are the five elements of the direct-mail package. In creating the package, AIDA must be applied to each element to create the interest to proceed to examine the entire package and respond. These guidelines for preparing an effective direct-mail piece are explained after the example of a Matroushka, a Russian doll within a doll within a doll toy, is used to represent the ideal feeling that a mailing should inspire in its readers - the feeling of anticipation and wanting to get to the bottom of the subject at hand.
