Top bookie firms threaten to go offshore
Article Abstract:
The main United Kingdom bookmakers are threatening to move offshore in order not to have to pay a gaming tax of 9%. This follows a move by Victor Chandler, an independent company which has transferred its off-course telephone gambling business to Gibraltar. The government took some 450 million pounds sterling in gaming tax in 1998. Offshore betting operations are not permitted to advertise in the UK. Ladbrokes and William Hill, two of the big three UK companies in this sector, have operations in Gibraltar, which Ladbrokes has stated are for overseas clients only.

Cards on the table
Article Abstract:
The structure of the gambling industry in South Africa will change with the legalization of gambling in the entire country. Sun International dominates the industry and will have eight casino licenses, with 32 open to competition. Other bidders interested in the South African gambling industry include Bass Leisure and Ladbrokes. There is concern about social problems linked to gambling such as mafia activity and prostitution. Investors are interested in neighbouring countries as well as South Africa, and success in South Africa could open more doors.
