Tourism
Article Abstract:
Tourism has begun to grow again in South Africa, with some 700,000 visitors attracted annually, and accounting for a tenth of total tourism in that country. Fears of violence may deter tourists, and numbers dropped when a politician, Chris Hani, was assassinated. The country offers beaches, vineyards and game reserves. There have been shortages of five-star accommodation, and hoteliers have been attracted from abroad. Demand for air travel to South Africa has also increased.

Tourism
Article Abstract:
Crime is a handicap to the development of the South African tourist industry. The government sees tourism as a way of creating jobs to replace those lost in mining but the tourism budget has been reduced. South Africa offers scenery, wildlife, sporting activities and culture, but tourism only accounts for frlm 3% to 4% of gross domestic product. Casinos are being set up, helped by liberalized gaming laws, and game reserves and econ-tourism have potential.

The impala factor
Article Abstract:
The South African tourist industry has seen an increase in the number of visitors but is hampered by a number of problems such as perceptions of crime levels in the country. Costs are also higher than in many African countries, though they are below costs in the UK and tourists have benefited from the drop in value of the South African rand. There is overcapacity in the hotel sector which affects prices that four and five-star hotels can charge.
