Towards an attention-based view of the firm
Article Abstract:
An attention-based view of the firm that incorporates structure and cognition is developed. Unlike the pioneering theory put forward by Simon (1947) which this analysis seeks to extend, this perspective offers an explicit description of attentional processing as a multiple-level process that is molded by individuals, organizations and the environment. The basic tenet of this view is that the behavior of a firm is the outcome of the manner by which firms direct and distribute the attention of their decisionmakers. The three interrelated premises of this perspective look at the focus of attention, the situated attention and the structural distribution of attention. A model of firm behavior is developed based on these theoretical assumptions.

The aspects of experience with rational technologies in the pursuit of intelligence and the place of those technologies within a framework of feedback-based adaptive intelligence are explored, with an emphasis on the role of rationality in the balance between exploitation and exploration by which adaptive systems sustain themselves. It is mentioned that belief in the exploratory value of rational technologies requires a lap of faith about the virtue of joy and beauty go imagination.
