Training: When It Pays to Go Outside
Article Abstract:
Adequate training is essential to the successful implementation of a computer system. In-house training can be well-planned and cost effective. Practical, hands-on, exercises coupled with short information sessions are essential. This should be followed with on-the-job training. Manuals should be re-evaluated, particularly for currentness. Software supplies are often ready and willing sources for professional advice when needed in planning an education and training program. Training costs should be included in the budget for acquiring the system. Costs can be kept down by training the most suitable people at each development level. Due to the general naivete concerning computers among accountants, a new specialty is forming the systems accountant. Due to the complexity involved in planning, a company may find that external training would be more cost effective.

Video: a powerful training tool
Article Abstract:
Video films for the training of accountants in diverse subjects such as finance, management, and personal or selling skills abound; the leading name in the British video market is Video Arts, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales also produces quality videos on financial subjects (examples of Institute videos are 'The USM Opportunity', 'The Business Plan', and 'Tax Planning and the Family Business'). Video films are much more effective if used as part of a formal training program. Video films on financial subjects are also provided by 'Spencafilms' and the 'Financial i', whereas 'Finance Video Training' provides technical updating services.

Considerable planning needs to be done to implement a new computerized accounting system into a company. The handling of training requires considerable skill, coordination and knowledge. The project leader needs to have background in data processing, be respected, have a broad view of the organization and its aims, but most of all, have leadership qualities. Timing and location of training sessions needs to be carefully considered. Preferably, it would be at the supplier's location as close to the implementation date as possible. An example of a company with inadequate planning is drawn. Possible problems in implementation are discussed.
