Transport: buses braced for shake-up
Article Abstract:
UK bus lines could face major changes if the Labor party were elected. The party is concerned that monopolies have arisen since deregulation, with market fares up by 25% more than the rate of inflation in the ten years to 1996, and usage of buses down by a quarter in this period. The existing system only has regualtion for bus lines operating in London, England. This regulatory system could be used outside London if the party is elected. Bus companies may also be taxed more.

Buses in need of new routes
Article Abstract:
The seven largest operators of bus lines control 55% of the UK market. Stagecoach ranks first in this market with a 13% stake. Overheads have been diluted with the expansion of bus networks. The companies still face a shrinking market as usage of cars increases. Some companies are expanding abroad, such as Stagecoach, which is moving into Portugal, and some are diversifying into railroads. Regulation of bus lines could create problems if control increases significantly.
