Tread carefully through tangled insider laws
Article Abstract:
UK laws on insider trading in stocks mean that using inside information to deal, or advise another to deal, is illegal. The courts decide what constitutes inside information. Trading in stocks in small companies can be detected more easily but dectection can also occur when larger companies are involved. There are risks to reputation as well as prosecution risks. Stockbrokers may buy or sell shares prior to carrying out a large order for a client which is likely to affect the price. This example is called front running.

Promises, promises
Article Abstract:
Stamp duty charged on share purchases in the UK brings in 1 billion pounds sterling annually. The UK government stated that duty would be abolished with the introduction of an electronic settlement system, but a delay in implementing this sytem has meant that duty remains. The UK Treasury argues that stamp duty will not be abolished until the Treasury can afford to do this. The duty may never be abolished since there is pressure on government funding and a new government may decide to retain the duty.

Profits from poverty
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom companies specialising in loans to people who cannot easily obtain credit have been performing well in terms of stock prices and earnings. These credit companies include Cattles, London Scottish and Provident Financial. Collectors visit homes and are able to assess whether repayments can be made. There are still concerns that an economic downturn could affect these companies, and that they could become subject to tighter government regulations.
