Trunk muscle activation and low back loading in lifting in the absence of load knowledge
Article Abstract:
Lifting is thought to be linked to the development of low back pain. To determine if the condition of only knowing the range of masses to be lifted would result in different reactions of the back and abdominal muscles, nine males lifted boxes weighing 6.5 or 16.5 kg. A higher back muscle activation in grasping the box and a higher peak L5/S1 torque in actual lifting were observed for the 6.5 kg weight. Back muscle activation was lower during grasping and higher during lifting in the unknown for the 16.5 kg weight.

Force direction and physical load in dynamic pushing and pulling
Article Abstract:
Direction of force exertion and net joint shoulder and lumbo-sacral joint moments were studied in subjects who were performing pushing and pulling tasks while walking on a treadmill. Force direction was affected by the horizontal force level and handle height. Changes in force exertion were reflected in changes in should torque and low back torque.

Mechanical loading of the low back and shoulders during pushing and pulling activities
Article Abstract:
An attempt made to quantify the mechanical load on the low back and shoulders during pushing and pulling in combination with three task constraints is presented. Further, the relation between the initial and sustained exerted forces and the mechanical load on the low back and shoulders is explored.
