UK: DAVIS DECLARES FAITH IN SAINSBURY

The new chief executive of Sainsbury's has pledged that he will bring about change at the supermarket group by 'leading from the front'. Sir Peter Davis, who will take up his post on 1 March 2000, said that he wanted to make Sainsbury's a special place to shop in and a place where people would be proud to work.

UK: SAINSBURY'S STANDS BY LOW PRICE GUARANTEE

Despite a fall in pre-tax profits to GB[pound] 352mn in the 28 weeks to 16 October 1999, Sainsbury's will stand by its guarantee of low prices. A further 18-20 new stores are planned for 2000 and the company may bid for some of the Somerfield stores. Sainsbury's is also keen to establish a presence on the web.
