UK equities: a disconsolate mood
Article Abstract:
January is seen as a good month for the performance of UK shares but this is less true of Jan 1995. The UK economy is performing well in terms of growth and inflation, but there are fears that US share prices could fall, bringing down UK share prices with them. There are also concerns linked to political change in the UK, and to the sustainability of a large rise in the profits of UK companies which has partly been funded from wages. Furthermore, there is concern as to the extent to which UK base rates will be raised in 1995.

Budget day blues
Article Abstract:
March has historically been a poor month for share prices in the UK, especially the first half of the month. This changed following the introduction of budgets in March, but old patterns may re-emerge with the end of spring budgets. Price changes during March are also affected by price trends in the preceding three months. Large price declines from Dec to Feb each year tend to be followed by price rises in March, while small declines tend to be followed by falls in March.

Little short-term cheer for smaller companies
Article Abstract:
The performance of shares in UK small companies excelled that of larger companies in 1994, but this was only true for the early part of the year. The market for shares in smaller companies is likely to be affected by the performance of large companies in 1995, though there will be a time lag between large companies improving and small companies' stocks rising. Interest in smaller companies' shares has decreased, though a revival could be rapid, as happened in 1995.
