Legal privilege is a benefit that the law confers on people consulting lawyers, but it is a benefit that can affect accountants and auditors as clients of lawyers, as well as their own clients. There is a public interest in safeguarding legal advice and the courts will uphold it, but there are definite signs that privilege is under attack in the UK and, for the sake of clients everywhere, it needs protection.
