Article Abstract:

The European Community plans to complete its program for a single internal market by 1992, hoping that complete economic integration between countries will eventually be achieved. Effects of the integration could include: growth in the size and number of European, rather than national, businesses; more choices for consumers; and, for businesses, more investment in distribution and production, higher cost savings, and a rise in income level. Effects on the accountancy profession will involve the opportunity for accounting firms to specialize in cross-border transactions as well as forming relationships with firms in other countries. Competition may increase as non-UK accounting firms enter the UK market. Cross-border accounting regulations will need to be standardized, resulting in more governmental involvement in the accounting profession.
