Upturn in pulp is no fiction
Article Abstract:
Sweden's pulp and paper industry has recovered quickly from the overcapacity problems of 1991 and 1992, with prices and demand rising. The weakened krona has made Sweden's large pulp and paper groups, including MoDo, Stora and SCA, globally competitive and 1995 is forecast to be a good year, with many companies planning to increase investment and add to capacity. However, some shareholders are urging caution as investment in too many large machines could again result in the overcapacity that caused so many problems in the last cyclical downturn.

Pulp friction
Article Abstract:
The Swedish forestry product industry is likely to be affected by overcapacity and slower economic growth in 1999. The sector has undergone consolidation, and is cost efficient and slimmer compared with previous performance, but soft prices are still a problem. Stora has merged with Enso from Finland, and other major companies in the sector could follow this example, seeking partners from abroad. MoDo is one company that looks a likely candidate for consolidation due to its small size which is a weakness in the global market.

Pulp fictions
Article Abstract:
The Swedish pulp and paper industry saw a drop in earnings of as much as 70% for some firms during 1996. This is a sharp drop, even in a cyclical industry like forestry. Pulp prices rose to 1995 before falling in 1996. Further falls in price could occur in 1997. Large pulp producers from emerging economies are entering the market. Overcapacity could become a problem in 1997 when prices are already depressed due to high inventory levels.
