Upward trend in financing continues, but fewer feel flush
Article Abstract:
Biotech financing has totaled about $27 billion in 2006, where most of the increase has come from exceptionally large debt deals. The shift from initial public offering (IPO) to merger and acquisition (M&A) has increased and the year 2006 has turned out to be the biggest year for biotech venture capital (VC) investment with $5.5 billion by early December.

Patent drop reveals pressures on industry
Article Abstract:
Increasing pressure for clearly defined patent applications, the completion of the human genome project and the 2000 biotech market bubble could be behind the shrinking number of biotech patents approved in the United States. The trend seems to have declined in 2004 with DNA-based patent applications down 23 percent for the first half of the year.

Looking at US versus European exit opportunities
Article Abstract:
The data on initial public offerings (IPOs) and trade sale exits through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) suggest that the exit opportunities for biotech investors and entrepreneurs are in greater supply in the US than in Europe. The data reveals that the proceeds and volume for biotech IPOs in the US actually peaked in the second quarter of 2004.
