VAT update: Accountancy monthly round-up of the latest VAT developments
Article Abstract:
Customs has issued a consultation paper concerning its tightening up of VAT group registration rules and suggests the implementation of new rules in the summer of 2004 to automatically narrow the criteria for VAT grouping. This would take the pressure off Customs to exercise its powers of protecting the revenue by denying group registration, or by breaking up existing VAT groups.

New civil investigation of fraud procedures
Article Abstract:
The Revenue and Customs department has issued new procedures relating to the civil investigation of fraud. These procedures replace the former inland Revenue's Hansard procedures and the former Customs and Excise Civil Evasion procedures and relate to both direct and indirect taxes.
