A study questions whether exertion and discomfort can be perceived by an external observer, thus finding the possibility of vicarious perception. Results show that vicarious perception of discomfort and exertion is possible and that there is a tendency toward conservatism in rating of exertion and discomfort, with low values being overestimated and high values underestimated.
