Wage freezes thaw out
Article Abstract:
An analysis of wages for Canadian CEOs showed a 8% median base salary increase in 1993 compared to the previous year. Among the top Canadian industries, CEOs in the metals, minerals, gold and silver sectors had the highest average wage increases of 10% while CEOs in the communications and media sectors received the lowest wage increases of only 4%. In addition, the results showed that companies which adopted incentive-based pay for its senior executives were more successful than firms that opted for other incentive schemes.

A study by William M. Mercer Limited showed that organizational change in Canada has affected compensation levels and practices. Average annual pay rose by 2.6% between 1992 and 1995. Base pay for jobs within the $40,000 and $75,000 salary range grew by 3% in 1992 while jobs in the $75,000 and $90,000 range increased by less than 1%. Employees eligible for variable pay programs in 1995 were also those who earned less than $75,000 in 1992.

Executive compensation has been a subject of interest among regulators. An accounting standard is being developed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board for executive stock options. Executive performance can be reflected by instituting accounting measures. Accounting-based performance has been found to affect cash compensation 10 times more than stock performance.
