Wal-Mart to pursue significant expansion next year

Wal-Mart Stores Inc is pushing through with an aggressive unit growth for the fiscal year beginning Feb 1, 2001. It plans to open around 40 new discount stores and 170 to 180 new Supercenters domestically. The aggressive expansion is attributable to the popularity of the Supercenters with customers and their strong financial results. Wal-Mart is also adding 15 to 20 more Neighborhood Market units while expanding the Sam's Club division.

Best Buy plans to open 60 new stores in 2001

Minneapolis, MN-based Best Buy Company Inc is planning to open more than 60 new retail locations throughout the US by yearend 2001. The company will place much of its emphasis in the New York/New Jersey market, which it entered last fall when it opened 15 stores. Five new stores are planned for this market by late summer or early fall 2001. The company is planning to have 40 stores in the New York/New Jersey market by 2004.
