Wall Street's appeal to Europe
Article Abstract:
US stock prices dropped in early Aug 1998 and this reflects slower earnings growth. Earnings per share forecasts for Europe are higher, but growth could still be disappointing, and European stock markets have not priced in this possibility. US analysts are optimistic about longer term earnings. Corporate restructuring is one reason for seeing European earnings as likely to rise, and there is no certainty that growth in Europe will be slower than forecast. US bond yields could also rise, which would affect stock prices.

Article Abstract:
There has been a change in philosophy among the managers of Europe's top companies, with a new focus on the needs of stockholders. There are opportunities for investors. Other favorable developments include a real-time interface between the settlement systems of Britain and Germany, and new links between the British and French stock markets planned by Feb 2000. The cost of purchasing Swiss stocks has also been reduced as a result of a direct link to the exchange in Zurich, Switzerland.
