Warnings in research and practice
Article Abstract:
Warnings have an important role in ergonomics. They come in two forms, namely, visual warnings and auditory warnings. Warnings should be a supplement to safety procedures. Visual clutter is said to diminish the probability of people to act on warnings. Over-warning may become a problem. Auditory warnings may have problems in identification and recognizability than visual warnings. Findings from each of the papers in the issue are summarized.

A comparison of different techniques for scaling perceived urgency
Article Abstract:
Usage of four experiments in ascertaining the validity of different scaling techniques of subjective perceived urgency, a vital psychosocial factor of auditory warnings, provided insight on the versatility of free modulus magnitude estimation as the best scaling technique. This technique is a vital requirement in the workplace to assess emotions such as sense of urgency of employees.

The semantic associations of acoustic parameters commonly used in the design of auditory information and warning signals
Article Abstract:
Two experiments were performed to study the relationship between 42 pre-selected adjectives and four acoustic parameters. Four sets of seven stimuli each which varied along pitch, speed, inharmonicity and rhythm were scaled in the first experiment along the 42 adjectives. The general meaning of complete within-parameter stimulus sets were examined in the second experiment.
