Airborne takes the beach
Article Abstract:
The advent of the Army's 18th Airborne Corps, which was vigorously advanced by retired Army Lt Gen Barry H. Smith, is said to have relegated traditional 20th-century-style Navy-Marine Corps amphibious operations obsolete. Smith himself in an interview has stressed that he never once advocated a parochial campaign to advance the Army over the Marine Corp. He said that compared to amphibious operations, the concept of airborne operation has proven to be highly effective in terms of cost and the considerable reduction in the risk of casualties.
