Weed science in sustainable agriculture
Article Abstract:
A study analyzes the role and future prospects of weed science in sustainable agriculture by emphasizing the study of weed biology and ecological principles which help in the sustainable management system. There is a need for more stress on population biology and ecology and more of an ethical basis for weed science. This will require a new, sustainable weed management system that will depend on information gathered from answers to new queries about weed-crop dynamics and management procedures. The relationship between weed science and herbicides is also discussed.

Sustainable agriculture in the Corn Belt: production-side progress and demand-side constraints
Article Abstract:
Corn and soybean farmers in Iowa select between two methods of farming. One is a low-input production operation that utilizes the ridge tillage system. This system is superior both environmentally and economically as a result of the use of elevated seedbeds and lower amounts of chemicals. Farmers using conventional production operations criticize the use of the feasible and profitable ridge tillage as too risky because of its dependence on herbicide banding, mechanical cultivation and post-emergence N application.

Community-controlled economic development as a strategic vision for the sustainable agriculture movement
Article Abstract:
A community-controlled agricultural system can lead to remarkable local economic development. The experience of the California Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture (CASA) demonstrates that unified grassroots efforts in developing a sustainable agricultural system, may enhance not only economic stability but also civic relations in the community. The benefits of grower information networks, marketing coalitions and political collaboration are also manifested in the CASA experience.
