Union banka (UB) (Ostrava, Czech Republic), bank, saw a profit of CEK 15.5 mil in 2000 compared to a loss of CEK 99.2 mil in 1999. In 1998 it generated a profit of CEK 22.5 mil. The bank has a classified-credits share of 65.93%. It has 106 branches and owns 17 cash dispensers. Its majority shareholder is the financial group Union Group (UG) (Ostrava, Czech Republic). In the process of the stabilization of small banks, UB acquired Bankovni dum Skala (Czech Republic), Ekoagrobanka (Czech Republic), Evrobanka (Czech Republic) and Foresbanka (Czech Republic). UB received a total of about CEK 19 bil from the Czech National Bank to cover losses from the transaction. The bank had problems with the financing of its shareholders and affiliated firms. The group UG should sell Vojensky otevreny penzijni fond (Czech Republic), Bank Przemyslowy (Poland) and Union Pojistovna (Czech Republic) to cover all the risks. The entrance of an investor to UG, which associates UB, should be completed by the end of Jun 2001. The bank should be sold to a strategical investor within a year.

Bank Austria Creditanstalt (BAC) (Prague, Czech Republic), bank, saw a profit of CEK 538 mil in 2000 compared to CEK 500.5 mil in 1999 and CEK 223 mil in 1998. The bank's share in classified credits is 6.6%. BAC has 17 branches and owns six cash dispensers. It is preparing for connection with the bank HypoVereinsbank (Czech Republic). BAC's majority shareholder is Bank Austria (Austria).
