When an inspector calls: why a visit from the JMU is really rather pleasant
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales helps ensure that professional standards are upheld by conducting regular inspections of the audit procedures used by practitioners. The task of conducting these inspections is left to the Joint Monitoring Unit (JMU) operated by the Institute. Typically, practitioners are informed of an impending JMU visit several weeks in advance. This gives them enough time to prepare for the JMU inspection, which is conducted with the aim of identifying areas where audit procedures can be improved. To minimize disruptions during a JMU visit, practitioners are usually treated to a 'focused visit' which is designed to be completed within a day.

Student recruitment in black and white
Article Abstract:
An investigation into racial bias in British accounting firms is discussed. The Commission for Racial Equality was established by the Institute of Chartered Accountants to examine discrimination against ethnic minorities in the recruitment of accounting students. The results of the investigation show that while there is little overt discrimination against minorities in the employment practices of accounting firms, there is a bias against minorities in all stages of student recruitment. Most accounting firms have explicit non-discriminatory policies, but recruiters tend to select applicants in their own image: white, male, public school graduates.

Who will be holding the baby in 1995?
Article Abstract:
Demographic trends in the UK indicate that there may be an acute shortage of school graduates by 1995. Employers will have to increase their efforts to recruit women into the labor force to fill positions which require skilled workers. The accounting profession should begin to take steps to foster conditions for the return of women to work, including the implementation of: career break schemes; home working; and childcare. The profession must also improve the retention of women employees by enhancing the upward career mobility of women through management courses specifically aimed at the career needs of women.
