When the best price isn't so good
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stockbrokers may not always offer the best price for investors since they tend to use a market-maker or Sets, but do not ask several market makers and select the best price. Barclays Stockbrokers offers a Price Improver service which does shop around, and the improvements may be significant for people doing many or large deals, though the amount per stock may be small. Institutional investors have tended to shop around, but it is difficult for small investors to do so, and brokers may not offer the best price while still complying with regulations.

Sharedealing: here's the deal...
Article Abstract:
Investors seeking to buy shares in the UK can choose from three levels of service. Investors with a small amount to invest, or who do not require advice, can use execution-only services which do not provide advice. Investors with more to invest can use advisory services. Investment management services are offered to investors with more money to invest and some investment managers only accept investors with a minimum of 50,000 pounds sterling.

Broking a good deal
Article Abstract:
UK stockbrokers offer a range of services, and their charges depend partly on the type of service offered. Execution-only services are cheaper than services where advice is provided. Some brokers, such as ShareLink, charge more if investors do not use nominee accounts. Brokers should not be selected purely on the grounds of how much they charge, for example, high-quality advice is important if investors are seeking advice from their broker.
