Which ones should you dump?
Article Abstract:
Companies in the FTSE 100 index tend to play an important role in the portfolios of private investors. They include BAA, an airports operator, which has defensive qualities with its regulated income stream. The company's retail operation would, however, be affected by additional economic instability. BOC is undertaking a restructuring and ranks second in the world market for gases, a business that should benefit from the company's past investments. Problems could occur with vacuum technology and may arise from the strength of pound sterling and Asian economic problems.

Ways to capture those slippery capital gains
Article Abstract:
Stop losses have been used as a technique for preventing losses from sharp price drops in stock prices. They are portfolio disciplines which mean that stocks are sold once they drop to a given price. They can also be used as signals to buy stocks. Not all brokers will provide automatic stock loss services, and execution-only brokers normally do not do so. Investors may be better off not using an automatic stop-loss service, since they also need to know the company that they are investing in.
