Will space run out of space? The orbital debris problem and its mitigation
Article Abstract:
The Meteoroid and Space Debris Terrestrial Environment Reference model developed by the Institute for Flight Mechanics and Spaceflight Technology of the University of Braunschweig in Germany provides is an invaluable tool for evaluating risks due to space debris. To prevent the problem from paralyzing spaceflights, man-made space objects should avoid exploding while in orbit and voluminous objects should be de-orbited. The UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space is also addressing the issue by applying the safety principles used on regulating nuclear power resources in space.
